Welcome to the MOAA Regional Maps Home Page

On this site, we have implemented two approaches to viewing the regional maps, initially for Ohio only.

1. Fine-Grained Method

The initial approach was to create a large number of files to include all the ZIPCodes for the state of Ohio, and then for the rest of the US. This way, each state would have the ability to work independently. However, this resulted in masses of data and the inability to display all the requisite data for many states. In Ohio, for example, there are six files required for the ZIPCode data, and seven for the regions, but Google Maps cannot display more than ten at a time.

The data from this approach are all available on this site. Note that the data is not complete at this level of detail for ZIPCodes across the entire US.

To go to the page with the data links, Click here, or select 'DIRECT MAPPING' from the main menu, above.

2. View on this Website

The second method we developed was to build a Google Maps viewer into this website. There is a page set up to allow connections to any state, and a state-specific map display page for each state. Note that only Ohio is implemented at this time.

The page will automatically load a Google Maps street layer backdrop map, followed by the ZIPCode polygons for the state in question, together with the surrounding states. This is to allow for regions crossing state boundaries.

The ZIPCodes for this implementation have been aggregated into Google Fusion Tables, which allows all the ZIPCodes to be handled for the entire country in just 14 Fusion Tables. Unfortunately, one of the limitation of Google Maps is that when Fusion Tables are loaded and displayed, the is a miximum of five of them allowed, and only one can have its appearance altered. As a result, at this time the Fusion Table that includes the state of interest is displayed with a lower color intensity, while the other Fusion Tables are displayed with the default coloring. We will endeavor to correct this limitation over time.

The map display page for each state includes a series of check boxes that allow the various regions to be displayed. At present, they can only be switched on and off. We will update the regions to allow better display on the map, mainly with better colors and degrees of transparency, as well as included attribute data. At present, we cannot do this readily on the website, and there are no user controls available to manage this.

To explore this approach, Click here, or click on the 'SELECT STATE' menu item, above. This page has links to the relevant state display pages. Note that this menu item also has a drop-down list of all the implemented states, so you can go directly to the state you want to see.
